The sponsors have established a PFLAG chapter and soon Brownsville's very own PFLAG will start making appearances in the parades and other locations throughout the city. Would you believe that many people working for the school district don't know what LGBT means?
The hopes are that eventually we can have a float in the local parades like charro days. In essence we make our presence known!
Eventually the goal is to create PRIDE IN THE PARK. If we start putting a face on the LGBT community, people will be more receptive and accepting. We can make pride something for everyone where they can take their children and just get to know the community. Could you imagine an annual Pride in the Park where people will be grilling out and just getting to know each other? Pride means different things to different people and the thing is that Pride can extend to the straight community as well by letting them show their pride- in their community, their friends, their families/children, etc.
I think this will be a huge opportunity to dispel the myths people have about the LGBT community and once we organize we can defend ourselves from people who insist on blaming LGBT people for being victims of crimes like the ones Barry, Richard and John suffered. That was abuse and they didn't deserve it. People need to understand that. This is my dream so I hope that it can become a reality within the next few years. -Yoli Armoire Theater Sponsor
